How to Edit Videos With ChatGPT (Step by Step, 2026)

Short answer: ChatGPT can't edit a video file on its own, but it can edit your video inside a connected editor. Connect ChatGPT to an editor like Takejam (one address plus a sign-in), describe the edit in plain words, and watch it cut, add titles, grade colour and caption on a real timeline that you can still adjust by hand.

Can ChatGPT actually edit videos?

Not on its own. If you upload a video to ChatGPT, it can describe it or write a script for it, but it has no timeline to cut on and no way to export a finished edit. What changed recently is that ChatGPT can now use other apps. Once it's connected to a video editor, it stops giving you advice and starts doing the work: it places the cuts, adds the text and sets the colour, while you watch.

That's the setup this guide covers. We'll use Takejam because it was built for exactly this. It runs in the browser, it's free to start, and every edit the AI makes stays fully editable.

What you need

  • A ChatGPT account. To connect the ChatGPT app you need Developer mode, which depends on your ChatGPT plan.
  • A free Takejam account at app.takejam.com.
  • Chrome or Edge on a computer (Windows, Mac or Linux).
  • Your clips, music and images on your computer. You'll drop them into Takejam yourself, because ChatGPT can't upload files from your computer.

No Developer mode on your plan? Skip to "Option 2" below. It works with any OpenAI API key, right inside the editor.

Option 1: connect the ChatGPT app to Takejam

  1. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced and turn on Developer mode.
  2. Back in Apps & Connectors, click Create. Name it Takejam, paste the address https://api.takejam.com/mcp and choose OAuth.
  3. A Takejam page opens. Sign in, pick the workspace ChatGPT may edit, and click Allow.
  4. Open your project at app.takejam.com, so you can watch.
  5. In a new ChatGPT chat, pick Developer mode from the + menu, turn on Takejam, and ask for your edit.

OpenAI renames these menus from time to time. If something looks different, look for "connectors" or "apps" in ChatGPT's settings.

Option 2: chat with ChatGPT inside the editor

  1. Open or create a project at app.takejam.com.
  2. Click the AI tab on the left and choose ChatGPT.
  3. Paste an API key from platform.openai.com.
  4. Type what you want.

Your key stays in your browser and goes only to OpenAI. OpenAI bills the key's usage separately from your ChatGPT subscription.

What to ask ChatGPT (prompts that work)

The best requests say what, how long and what feeling you want. A few that work well:

GoalAsk this
Short reel"Cut my travel clips into a 20-second reel on the beat of the music."
Title"Add a big title 'Summer '26' that rises in word by word in the first 2 seconds."
Look"Give every shot a warm golden-hour grade and a soft vignette."
Pace"The intro is slow. Add a speed ramp so it punches in."
New format"Make a 9:16 version of this for Reels and TikTok."
Check"Look at the edit and tell me what you'd improve."

Then iterate in small steps. "Make the title smaller" or "use a different font" works better than rewriting the whole request. If you don't like a change, click Undo AI change in Takejam and try again.

How do you get better results?

  • Name your clips well. "drone-beach.mp4" tells the AI far more than "IMG_4031.mp4".
  • Ask it to check its own work. "Look at frames 2, 5 and 9 and fix anything that looks off" makes it render the video and correct itself.
  • Lock what's finished. If a reviewer marks a scene as approved, the AI leaves it alone.
  • Finish by hand. The AI gets you 80–90% of the way fast. For the last touches, drag a clip or nudge a keyframe yourself. That's the point of editing on a real timeline.

What ChatGPT can't do here

  • It can't upload files from your computer. Add your media in Takejam first.
  • It doesn't generate new footage. It edits what's in your project.
  • It sees a description of your timeline and, when it checks its work, a few small preview frames. It doesn't watch your raw footage.

Is it free?

Takejam's Free plan includes the full editor, 1080p export with no watermark, and 50 AI edits a day. Creator ($5 a month) makes AI edits unlimited and adds 4K export. ChatGPT's own plan, or your OpenAI API usage, is billed by OpenAI.

Questions, answered

Can ChatGPT edit a video I upload to it?

No. ChatGPT can describe an uploaded video, but it can't cut or export one. Connect it to a video editor like Takejam and it can edit on a real timeline.

Do I need ChatGPT Plus to edit videos?

To connect the ChatGPT app you need Developer mode, which depends on your plan. You can skip the app entirely and use ChatGPT inside Takejam's AI tab with an OpenAI API key.

Does ChatGPT see my video files?

Not the original files. It reads a description of your timeline and, when it checks its work, a few small preview frames rendered by your editor. Your media stays on your computer.

Can I undo what ChatGPT did?

Yes. Every AI edit saves a version first, so "Undo AI change" restores the project in one click. In the AI tab, Ctrl+Z works too.

Which is better for editing, ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?

All three work with Takejam. Pick the one you already use and like. You can switch any time, and your project stays the same.
