CapCut in ChatGPT: What It Does and What Works Today

Short answer: CapCut announced a ChatGPT plugin at CapCut World Los Angeles on 24 October 2026. You'll describe an idea in ChatGPT, CapCut will build a first cut, and you'll finish it in CapCut's web editor. It isn't available yet ("coming months") and pricing hasn't been announced. To edit your own footage in ChatGPT today, connect an editor like Takejam.

What did CapCut announce?

At its CapCut World event in Los Angeles on 24 October 2026, CapCut said a CapCut plugin is "coming soon" to ChatGPT. CapCut's own newsroom post, published on 27 October, describes it like this: you develop an idea in ChatGPT, CapCut assembles a first cut, and you refine it by chatting, with requests like "hold that shot longer", "make the captions easier to read" or "keep the music under the voiceover". You can also make manual edits, and ChatGPT keeps track of them in the conversation. When you're happy, you take the draft into CapCut's web editor to polish, share and publish.

Here is everything CapCut has actually said, in one place:

QuestionWhat CapCut has said (as of 30 October 2026)
When?"In the coming months." No date.
Where?Inside ChatGPT. The plugin hands off to CapCut's web editor to finish.
What does it do?Turns an idea or script into a first cut, then changes it as you chat.
What does it cost? Not announced. No word on whether you need ChatGPT Plus or CapCut Pro.
Other AI apps?Only ChatGPT was named. Nothing about Claude or Gemini.

The same event also announced an updated EditPilot for CapCut Desktop, which lets you describe timeline edits in plain words, and a separate "agentic" creation pilot that will reach desktop, web and mobile, again "in the coming months".

How will the CapCut plugin work in ChatGPT?

Based on CapCut's description and demo, the flow is:

  1. Start with an idea. You type a concept or script into ChatGPT.
  2. Turn on the CapCut plugin in the chat.
  3. CapCut builds a first cut as a draft inside the conversation.
  4. Refine by chatting. Ask for timing, caption and audio changes. Manual tweaks are understood too.
  5. Open the draft in CapCut's web editor to adjust timing, fix sound, add clean cuts, and publish.

Notice where the work ends: in CapCut's editor, not in ChatGPT. The chat is for the first cut. The finishing still happens on a timeline.

What don't we know yet?

A few things to keep in mind before you plan your workflow around it:

  • It isn't out. CapCut says "coming months". One early write-up (Wireflow) says the first version targets the ChatGPT desktop app, with other platforms later, but CapCut's own post doesn't commit to any of that.
  • Pricing is open. CapCut hasn't said whether it needs a ChatGPT plan, a CapCut Pro subscription, both or neither. SoyaCincau flagged the same question.
  • ChatGPT only, so far. CapCut announced a similar partnership with the Gemini app back in May (9to5Google), and we couldn't find a report of it launching yet. If you use Claude, nothing has been announced at all.
  • It leans toward generating, not editing what you shot. The demos start from an idea and a script. If your real problem is 40 minutes of your own footage, wait for the details.

Can you edit video in ChatGPT today?

Yes, and you don't have to wait. ChatGPT can already drive a video editor that's built for it. Takejam is a browser editor with an open connector at https://api.takejam.com/mcp. ChatGPT reads your timeline, makes the cuts, adds titles and captions, grades colour, and renders frames to check its own work. Every change lands on a normal timeline, so you can adjust it by hand.

Here's the short version. Our ChatGPT editing guide has every click and a list of prompts that work.

  1. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced and turn on Developer mode (availability depends on your ChatGPT plan).
  2. Click Create, name it Takejam, paste https://api.takejam.com/mcp, choose OAuth and save.
  3. Sign in to Takejam on the page that opens, pick the workspace, and click Allow.
  4. Open your project at app.takejam.com and drop your clips in. They stay on your computer.
  5. In a new chat, turn on Takejam from the + menu and ask: "Cut these clips into a 30-second reel on the beat and add a bold title."

No Developer mode on your plan? Open the AI tab inside Takejam, choose ChatGPT and paste an OpenAI API key. It works on every ChatGPT plan, because it bills the key, not your subscription.

CapCut's plugin vs an open editor: what's the difference?

To be fair to CapCut: it has a huge template and stock library, a mobile app, and 700 million monthly users by its own count. If your videos live in CapCut templates on your phone, the plugin will probably fit you well once it ships. Takejam is a computer-only editor for people who have footage and want an AI that works on a real timeline they control.

Which should you choose?

  • Wait for CapCut's plugin if you mostly make videos from an idea with stock and templates, you edit on your phone, and you're happy finishing in CapCut's editor.
  • Try an open connector now if you have your own footage, you want ChatGPT (or Claude, or Gemini) to do the actual cutting, and you want to fix things by hand afterwards without moving to another app.
  • Do both. Nothing stops you from testing the connector today and adding the CapCut plugin when it arrives. The prompts you learn now, like "cut to the beat", "make the title bigger" or "keep the music under the voice", will transfer.

Questions, answered

Is the CapCut ChatGPT plugin available now?

No. CapCut announced it on 24 October 2026 and says it will arrive "in the coming months". There's no release date yet.

Will the CapCut plugin be free?

CapCut hasn't said. It's unknown whether you'll need a paid ChatGPT plan, CapCut Pro, both or neither. Check CapCut's newsroom for updates.

Will CapCut work with Claude or Gemini?

CapCut has only announced ChatGPT. A Gemini app partnership was announced in May 2026, but we couldn't find a report of it launching. Takejam's connector works with ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini today.

Can ChatGPT edit a video without CapCut?

Yes. Connect ChatGPT to an editor with an MCP connector, like Takejam, and it can cut, title, caption and colour-grade your footage on a real timeline. ChatGPT can't edit video files on its own.

Does the CapCut plugin finish the video inside ChatGPT?

No. By CapCut's description, ChatGPT produces a draft, and you open it in CapCut's web editor to refine and publish.

What's the difference between the ChatGPT plugin and CapCut's EditPilot?

EditPilot is a prompt-based editing feature inside CapCut Desktop. The ChatGPT plugin lives inside ChatGPT and builds a first cut there, then hands you over to CapCut's web editor.
