Takejam

ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini for Video Editing (2026)

Short answer: None of the three can edit a video file alone, but all three can edit on a real timeline once connected to an editor like Takejam, using exactly the same tools. Gemini is the cheapest start (free API key). Claude is the easiest chat-app setup (works on its Free plan). ChatGPT's app needs a Business-type plan, or an API key.

Which AI is best for editing videos?

Most comparisons of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini test them as chatbots: who writes the better script, who describes a clip better. That's not editing. None of the three has a timeline, and none of them can cut and export your footage on its own.

What changed in 2025 and 2026 is that all three can now use other apps through MCP (see What is MCP?). Connect one to a video editor and it stops giving advice and starts placing cuts, titles, captions and colour.

So the useful question is: once connected to the same editor, how do they differ? We can answer that fairly because Takejam gives all three the identical toolbox. Same timeline, same edit tools, same frame-check tool. The differences that are left are real ones: how you connect, which plan you need, what it costs, and what happens to your data.

The closest guide ranking today, Vidpal's, compares only Claude and ChatGPT. Here's all three.

How do you connect each one?

There are two routes for every AI, and they end up in the same place.

Route A: the AI's own chat app. You add Takejam's address, https://api.takejam.com/mcp, inside ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, sign in once and click Allow. Then you chat where you normally chat and watch the edit happen in your open Takejam project.

Route B: the AI tab inside the editor. In Takejam, click the AI tab on the left, choose Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini, paste an API key and type. Your key is kept in your browser and sent only to that AI company, never to Takejam.

Here's how Route A differs per AI, checked against each company's help pages today.

ChatGPT

You turn on Developer mode under ChatGPT's settings, then create an app with the Takejam address. The catch is the plan. OpenAI's help center lists apps with full MCP support and developer mode for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu, on the web, and on Business it's the admin or owner who turns developer mode on. ChatGPT may also ask you to confirm actions that change things.

If you're on another plan or the menu isn't there, use Route B with an OpenAI API key. Full steps: How to edit videos with ChatGPT.

Claude

Claude is the simplest. Anthropic's help page says custom connectors work on Free, Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise, with Free limited to one custom connector. You add it under Customize → Connectors → + Add → Add custom connector, and switch it on per chat with the + button. On Team and Enterprise, an owner adds it for the organization first. Full steps: How to edit videos with Claude.

Gemini

Gemini calls these custom apps. You add them on gemini.google.com under Settings → Connected Apps (or Personal Intelligence → Connected Apps), and Gemini asks you to confirm every write action. Today it's limited to people 18 or over in the US, on a personal Google account, in English, with Keep Activity on. Outside that, Route B with a free key works in any country. Full steps: How to edit videos with Gemini.

Not sure your account qualifies? Try Route B first. It takes two minutes, works on any plan and in any country, and nothing about your project changes if you switch to the chat app later.

What does each one cost?

Two separate bills can apply: the AI company's, and Takejam's.

The AI side:

  • Gemini: Google's pricing page lists several Flash models, plus Gemini 2.5 Pro, as free of charge on the free tier. That makes it the only one of the three with a free API key. (Claude's Free plan with the connector is the other no-cost route.)
  • Claude: the connector itself works on Claude's Free plan. With Route B, a Claude Console key is billed per use.
  • ChatGPT: the in-app route needs a Business-type plan. With Route B, an OpenAI key is billed per use, separately from any ChatGPT subscription.

The Takejam side is the same whichever AI you choose. The Free plan includes the full editor, 1080p export with no watermark and 50 AI connector edits a day. Creator ($5 a month or $48 a year) makes AI edits unlimited and adds 4K, HEVC/AV1 export, the brand kit and all templates. Team ($8 per seat a month, minimum two seats) adds live co-editing, roles and client review links.

Do they edit differently?

Less than you'd think, and that's the point. In Takejam, every AI reads the same description of your timeline, uses the same edit tools, and can render frames to check its work: up to six chosen moments, or a contact sheet of up to 24 frames. A request like "cut this to 30 seconds on the beat and add a bold title" gets handled the same way by all three:

  1. Read the timeline (clips, times, text, effects, the music's beat grid).
  2. Apply the edit as one change, so it's one click to undo.
  3. Render a few frames and look at them.
  4. Fix what looks wrong, then tell you what changed.

What does differ is the model. Each company offers faster, cheaper models and slower, stronger ones (Flash and Pro for Gemini, for example), and Takejam's AI tab lists the models your key can use with a sensible default first. A fast model is fine for "make the title smaller". For a full rough cut from twelve clips, pick the stronger model.

Our honest advice: don't choose on benchmarks. Try the same short request with two of them and keep the one whose edits you like. Because the project and tools are identical, you can switch AI between messages without redoing anything.

Which one is best for privacy?

With Takejam, the answer is mostly the same for all three, because your media files never leave your computer. The AI sees a text description of the timeline and, when it checks its work, a few small frames rendered by your open editor. It never receives your original footage.

The differences are in each company's data rules:

  • Gemini free tier: Google's pricing page says content sent on the free tier may be used to improve Google's products. For client work, use a paid key; Google says paid-tier content isn't.
  • Claude and ChatGPT: your account or API settings with Anthropic and OpenAI decide how your chats are handled. Check them if you edit client material.

If you need an AI to actually watch a long raw video and find moments in it, that's a different job. Google's docs say all Gemini models can process video, sampled at one frame per second by default, but that means uploading the video to Google. In Takejam you make that choice yourself; the editor doesn't send your footage anywhere.

What can't any of them do here?

The limits are the same for all three:

  • Upload or find files. You drop your media into Takejam; the AI uses what's in the project bin.
  • Generate new footage. They edit what you give them. (Gemini's Omni can regenerate short clips in the Gemini app, which our Gemini guide covers.)
  • Transcribe speech. You click Generate captions in the Captions tab (it runs on your computer, see our captions guide), then any of them can restyle the captions.
  • Change approved scenes. Scenes a reviewer marked approved are locked to the AI.
  • Edit on a phone. Takejam runs in Chrome or Edge on Windows, Mac and Linux computers.

And for all three, you can finish by hand. Everything the AI makes is an ordinary clip, title or keyframe on the timeline. If you don't like a change, click Undo AI change at the top of the editor.

So which should you pick?

  • You pay for no AI yet: Gemini, with a free key in the AI tab.
  • You use Claude every day: Claude, with the Takejam connector, even on Free.
  • Your company runs ChatGPT Business or Enterprise: ChatGPT in the chat app, once an admin enables developer mode.
  • You're on ChatGPT Plus or another plan without the menu: ChatGPT in Takejam's AI tab with an OpenAI key.
  • Your team is split: it doesn't matter. Everyone can use their own AI on the same project, and on the Team plan you edit it together live.

Try it with whichever you have at app.takejam.com. The Free plan is enough to test all three.

Questions, answered

Can ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini edit a video on their own?

No. In a plain chat, none of them can cut and export your footage. They can describe a clip or write a script. Connected to a video editor like Takejam, each can edit on a real timeline that you can still adjust by hand.

Which AI is free for video editing?

Gemini is the only one with a free API key, from Google AI Studio, which works in Takejam's AI tab. Claude's chat app also lets Free users add one custom connector, so you can edit with Claude Free through the Takejam connector.

Do I need ChatGPT Plus to edit videos with ChatGPT?

Plus alone doesn't get you there in the chat app: OpenAI's help center lists full app actions in developer mode for Business, Enterprise and Edu. On any plan you can use ChatGPT inside Takejam's AI tab with an OpenAI API key, billed per use.

Do the three get different features in Takejam?

No. Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini all use the same edit tools and the same frame-check tool on the same project. The differences are the model you pick, how you connect, and what the AI company charges.

Can I switch from one AI to another mid-project?

Yes. The project lives in Takejam, not in the chat. Edit with Gemini today and Claude tomorrow, or let teammates each use their own AI on the same timeline.

Does the AI see my video files?

No. It reads a description of your timeline and, when checking its work, a few small frames rendered by your editor. Your original files stay on your computer.
