Can AI make a Reel from my own clips?
Yes, but most "AI reel makers" don't do that. Search for one and you mostly find two kinds of tool: generators that make new videos with avatars or stock footage (HeyGen's roundup is a typical list), and clippers that pick moments from one long video for you. Both are useful. Neither takes your ten phone clips and a song and cuts them into a Reel you can still change.
Asking a chatbot on its own doesn't get you there either. In a test by Cutback, Claude could plan an edit from a transcript but couldn't edit the video, and the plan it wrote missed the length that was asked for.
What works is giving your AI a real editor to work in. This guide shows the whole thing in Takejam, a browser video editor that ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any MCP app can drive. The AI does the cutting on a real timeline. You watch, change anything by hand, and export. A first Reel takes about ten minutes once your clips are ready.
What are the ways to make a Reel with AI?
| Approach | Uses your footage? | You can fix it by hand? | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI video generator (avatars, stock) | No, makes new footage | Limited | Faceless or explainer videos |
| Auto-clipper for long videos | Yes, one long video | Usually trims and captions | Podcasts, streams, webinars |
| Chatbot on its own | Reads text, can't cut video | Nothing to fix, it's a plan | Ideas, hooks, scripts |
| Your AI + a real editor (this guide) | Yes, any clips, photos and music | Yes, every cut, title and keyframe | Travel, product, event and talking-head Reels |
What do you need before you start?
- Your clips, photos and one music track on your computer. Phone footage is fine.
- A computer with Chrome or Edge (Windows, Mac or Linux). Takejam doesn't edit on phones.
- An AI you already use. Claude works through its connector even on Claude's Free plan. Gemini has a free API key. ChatGPT works in its chat app on Business-type plans, or with an API key on any plan. Our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini comparison explains the differences.
- A free Takejam account. The Free plan exports 1080p with no watermark and includes 50 AI edits a day, which is usually plenty for a few Reels. If you post every day, Creator ($5 a month or $48 a year) makes AI edits unlimited and adds 4K export, the brand kit and all templates.
Your media files stay on your computer. The AI reads a description of your timeline and, when it checks its work, a few small frames. It never receives your original footage.
How do you make a Reel with AI, step by step?
1. Start a vertical project
Open app.takejam.com and create a project. In the top bar, set Aspect ratio to Vertical 9:16. At 1080p that's 1080×1920, the full-screen size Reels, TikTok and Shorts use.
You can also start from the Hook Reel template in the Templates tab (included on Free). It gives you a big hook line on top, word-by-word captions and a follow call-to-action at the end, ready to drop your clips under.
2. Add your clips and music
Drag your files into the Media tab. Put the music on the timeline, select it, open the Audio tab in the inspector and click Detect beat. Takejam finds the tempo, the downbeats and the drop, and draws a beat grid on the timeline. The AI can read that grid, so "cut on the beat" means the real beat of your song, not a guess.
If someone talks in your clips, open the Captions tab and click Generate captions. Speech becomes word-timed captions on your own computer (more in our captions guide).
Do these two clicks yourself before you ask the AI. Beat detection and speech-to-text run in your editor; the AI can't start them, but it uses their results.
3. Connect your AI
Pick one route:
- In your AI's chat app: add
https://api.takejam.com/mcpas a connector or app in Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini, sign in once and allow access. Step-by-step guides: Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini. - Inside Takejam: click the AI tab on the left, choose Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini and paste an API key. The key stays in your browser and goes only to that AI company.
New to connectors? What is MCP? explains it in two minutes.
4. Ask for the first cut
Be specific about length, order and feel. A prompt that works well:
"Make a 20-second Reel from the clips in the bin. Open with the most eye-catching shot, keep each shot 1 to 2 beats long, cut on the beat, and end on the drop. Add a short bold hook in the top third for the first 2 seconds: 'Lisbon in 20 seconds'. Keep it 9:16."
The AI reads your timeline, places and trims the clips, snaps the cuts to the beat grid and adds the title as one change. Then it renders a few frames to look at its own work and fixes what looks wrong before it tells you what it did. You see every change land on your timeline as it happens.
5. Polish it with follow-up requests
Keep going in plain words. Requests that work well for Reels:
- "Make the captions bigger, yellow highlight on the spoken word, centred lower third."
- "Give the whole video a warm, sunny look."
- "Swap the third and fourth shots and slow the last shot down a little."
- "Add a 'Follow for part 2' line for the last 2 seconds."
If you don't like a change, click Undo AI change at the top of the editor. Scenes you've marked approved are locked to the AI, so it won't touch a part you're happy with.
6. Fix the rest by hand
This is where an editor beats a black-box tool. Everything the AI made is a normal clip, title or keyframe:
- Framing: a horizontal clip in a vertical project can be set to Fill — crop to the frame or Fit — whole picture, with bars under Fit in the Transform tab. With Fill, nudge the position or add keyframes so the subject stays in shot.
- Timing: drag cuts on the timeline. With snapping on, they stick to beats, markers and other clips. The Beat cuts button re-snaps a whole track to the beat.
- Text and captions: click any word to edit it, and change font, colour, outline or animation in the Text tab.
7. Check the safe zones and export
In the preview, turn on Show safe zones (social app UI). It marks where the app's buttons, username and caption will sit, so your hook and captions don't end up underneath them.
Then click Export video… in the top bar: Format MP4, Resolution 1080p (Full HD), Range Whole video. Free exports have no watermark. Upload the file to Instagram, TikTok or YouTube.
How long should a Reel, TikTok or Short be?
There's no single best length. Short edits of 7 to 30 seconds are the easiest to make work, because the hook carries more of the video. A few rules worth knowing:
- YouTube Shorts: YouTube's help page says square or vertical videos up to three minutes long count as Shorts. A Short over one minute with an active Content ID claim is blocked worldwide, so for longer Shorts use music you have the rights to.
- Instagram and TikTok: both allow longer videos than most people need, and their limits change often. Check the app's upload screen if you plan to go long.
- Make two lengths: export your 20-second Reel, then ask the AI "now cut this down to 10 seconds with only the best four shots" and export again. Undo AI change brings the long version back. Short and long cuts of the same idea are a cheap test of what your audience watches.
What can't the AI do here?
Being clear about this saves time:
- It can't find or upload files. It uses what's in your project's media bin.
- It doesn't generate new footage. It edits the clips, photos and music you give it.
- It can't detect the beat or transcribe speech by itself. You click Detect beat and Generate captions once; then it works with the results.
- It won't post for you. You export the MP4 and upload it.
- No phone editing. Takejam runs on computers in Chrome or Edge.
Can a team make Reels together?
Yes. On the Team plan ($8 per seat a month, minimum two seats) several people edit the same project live, so one person can drive the AI while another fixes captions by hand. Client review links let a client watch, comment and approve without an account. More on the collaborative video editor page.
Ready to try it? Open app.takejam.com, drop in ten clips and a song, and ask your AI for a 20-second cut.
Questions, answered
Can ChatGPT make a Reel from my videos?
Not on its own: in a plain chat it can plan an edit but can't cut your files. Connected to a video editor like Takejam, it can place, trim and time your clips on a real 9:16 timeline, add titles and restyle captions, and you can adjust everything by hand afterwards.
What size should a Reel or TikTok be?
Vertical 9:16, which is 1080×1920 pixels at 1080p. In Takejam, choose Vertical 9:16 under Aspect ratio and export at 1080p (Full HD).
Is there a free AI Reel maker without a watermark?
Takejam's Free plan exports 1080p with no watermark and includes 50 AI edits a day. Pair it with Claude's Free plan connector or a free Gemini API key and the whole workflow costs nothing.
Can the AI cut my video to the beat of the music?
Yes, once you click Detect beat on the music clip. The AI then reads the beat grid and snaps cuts to it. You can also do it yourself with the Beat cuts button on the timeline.
Does the AI upload my videos?
No. Your media stays on your computer. The AI sees a text description of your timeline and a few small frames when it checks its work.
Can I turn a horizontal video into a vertical Reel?
Yes. Switch the project to Vertical 9:16, or ask the AI to do it. Then pick Fill (crop to the frame) or Fit (whole picture with bars) for each clip, and move the framing by hand where the subject drifts out of shot.
